Rinsing Gemstones

rinsing gemstones A lot of gemstones these days are dyed or heat-treated to enhance their color, and with dyed beads there's always a chance that the dye could leak or rub off.

Since we don't particularly want our customers to end up with a red (or purple, or green) neck the first time they wear a piece, we always rinse beads that might be dyed.

Rinsing beads is a really simple process. If it might be dyed, just drop the strand in a cup of water for two minutes or so, then lay it on a towel to dry. Stones that are soft, such as pearls, really REALLY shouldn't be put in water, but hard stones are fine.

Off the top of my head, here are some stones that I've found are often dyed:

- amethyst
- iolite (like whoa)
- garnet
- aquamarine (like whoa)
