Jewelry Care and Storage

- Real Simple magazine's July 2006 issues has a couple of interesting jewelry tips:
1. Use baby oil to untangle a necklace chain by dabbing a bit of oil onto the tangle, then using a straight pin to gently pull the knot apart.
2. This one's particularly useful now that it's hot. To ease off a ring that's stuck on your finger, put a bit of baby oil (lotion would probably work too) on your finger and then rotate the ring until it comes off.
3. If a necklace breaks, use dental floss to temporarily string the beads until you can get it fixed. Obviously any type of string would work with this one. They also recommend using (plain unwaxed) floss to slice cakes, which is odd but sounds effective.

- Another of Real Simple's jewelry recommendations involves using a tie rack to hang necklaces. I have to disagree with this one because beaded necklaces, when hung, will eventually stretch out of shape. The tie rack idea would work for chains, but that's about it. The best way I've found to store jewelry is to keep the pieces flat in a closed container. A good way to prevent tangling is to store each piece in a sturdy plastic storage bag like these reclosable bags from Uline. You don't even have to seal the bags. I'm working on a pattern for a really nice, silvercloth-lined jewelry storage "book" but haven't finished it yet.
